About Team 1208
The US FIRST Team 1208 (The Metool
Brigade), O'Fallon Township High School's Robotics Team, works year round
preparing for our annual Regional competitions. In 2009, the team competed
in the St. Louis and Kansas City Regional competitions as well as the
Championship in Atlanta, Georgia.
The whole team is student run, but we are directed and sponsored by
Mr. Eric Curry, our eternally
diligent and magnanimous leader. Our club officers, ~40 of them, must be
enrolled in Honors Physics 2 with Mr. Curry to hold a position. Students
select jobs at the beginning of the season and gain experience in those
positions. We have 3 departments in our leadership: Electrical, Mechanical,
and Administrative. These divisions collaborate to build the robot and to
get us to the competitions.
We started competing in
tournaments in 2003 after Mr. McCammack, our former electronics instructor,
founded our team and since then our team has gained confidence and a good
bit of experience. Along with Mr. Curry, we also receive a good deal of
support from our mentors.
Team 1208 draws off of three key mentors.
Chris Zahner, a loft engineer at Boeing, comes every Saturday due to his
work schedule, and he is the sole reason our lifter works as well
as it does. Marc Rhodes, our mentor from the Air Force, is a past
robotics member from his own high school. When in high school, Marc
drove his team's robot all four years. Therefore, Marc plays a
significant role in training our drivers for the competition. Also, he
contributes to the construction of the robot by supervising arbitrary jobs
and instructing us on ways to improve. Another Air Force employee,
David Gibbs, contributes in large part to all the progress we make in the
programming department. With experience on eight previous robotics
teams, David has a vast knowledge on possible improvements and on techniques
which tend to work better. He is constantly helping in order to
improve the efficiency of our kicker and to show the programming team what
they don't already know.
O'Fallon is a wonderful city thriving inside the St. Louis metro area.
Through our performance in Robotics, we hope to bring greater public
interest in the Robotics program and encourage our succeeding teams to
further our success!
